Changes in Editorial Policies: Exceptional Authorship Situations

Due to the increasing number of cases in other journals involving requests to include or exclude researchers in accepted articles, concerns have arisen about this mechanism, which was previously rarely used but is now becoming more common.

It has been observed that groups on social networks are literally "selling" co-authorship in accepted articles, leading to requests from journals to include new researchers in a study they did not contribute to but paid to be a part of.

Thus, the Revista Brasileira de Meio Ambiente will adopt, starting today, a highly conservative policy regarding this procedure: the rejection and archiving of an article upon any request to include a new researcher after the editorial decision has been made.

As justification, the Revista Brasileira de Meio Ambiente requires, at the time of submission, a supplementary document listing all the contributors involved in the work. Whether the article is accepted or rejected is part of the scientific process itself, but the addition of new contributors after an article is accepted is a highly controversial issue from an ethical and scientific standpoint.

If the article has already been published and such a request is made, the request will result in the article being rejected, archived, and a retraction will be issued in the edition where the research was published.

As a result, policies 7 and 8 in the "Exceptional Procedures" section will be updated.
