Reviewers’ Contributions to Decisions

Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and, through editorial communications with the author, can also help improve the manuscript.

Peer review is an essential component of formal academic communication and lies at the core of the scientific method. In addition to the specific ethical duties described below, reviewers should generally treat authors and their work as they themselves would wish to be treated and adhere to proper review etiquette.

Any reviewer selected who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and decline participation in the review process. This is the reviewer’s primary contribution to editorial decisions.
