Brazil, intermittent streams occur more frequently in the semi-arid region. The dissemination of information about intermittent rivers in Brazil is still scarce; most people associate a river with water flow, without observing the hydrological characteristics of the main channel when the river is not flowing. This study analyzed intermittent environmental perception among residents living around the Umbuzeiro River in Aiuaba, Ceará. Qualitative-quantitative questionnaires were applied to the population, containing questions about their knowledge regarding the importance of the river, ecosystem services, conservation of this water body, and actions developed for Umbuzeiro River conservation. It was found that local residents have knowledge about the hydrology and autochthonous organisms of intermittent rivers. Furthermore, residents recognize that there are factors causing environmental problems in intermittent rivers and dams, but they need to deepen their knowledge of environmental education to address these problems. We can conclude from our study that the autochthonous population has ancestral knowledge about intermittent rivers and the problems they face daily, thus it is important to utilize the resident knowledge for the elaboration and execution of policies for the protection of these water courses.
