In this study, the evolution of scientific knowledge on emissions trading systems (ETS) for CO₂ and their relationship with the financial performance of firms is researched. A dataset of 644 documents was analysed with bibliometric procedures: performance analysis and science mapping. Regarding the former, results show that the topic has been growing and attracting more research interest. In the latter, it was revealed that research on ETS has developed along multiple thematic streams, where the EU ETS and China ETS are the most analysed. Evidence regarding the link between ETS and the firms’ financial performance was found, but further empirical contributions are needed. It is concluded that the topic offers opportunities for research, and there remains a gap regarding the financial performance of firms and the effectiveness of the ETS.
