Abstract

The mining industry generates significant environmental and social impacts due to the intensive extraction of natural resources and its close interaction with communities and ecosystems. In this context, sustainability reporting has been regarded as a key mechanism for accountability, building legitimacy with stakeholders, and managing reputational risks. However, the literature shows limited integration of theoretical, methodological, and thematic approaches, as well as limited evidence in emerging contexts. The objective of this research is to analyze the structure of scientific knowledge on sustainability reporting in the mining industry, identifying thematic trends, predominant theoretical approaches, and methodological designs. To this end, a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review following the PRISMA guidelines are employed. The results show sustained growth in research between 2006 and 2026, with a predominance of studies in developed countries. The literature focuses primarily on qualitative methods that are critical and center on seeking recognition and managing stakeholder expectations, in accordance with theories of legitimacy and stakeholders. It also highlights a transition toward ESG frameworks and double materiality. Furthermore, a significant research gap in Latin America is identified.
